Web Performance Monitor and IE 10 / 11

Hi everyone,

 

There is an issue that has more to do with IE 10 and 11 than with WPM, but the effect is that the new WebCache that is utilized for IE will quickly grow in size into the 10s of gigabytes and fill up a hard drive because it caches every web browse session.

 

So for each SEUM user, this has to be managed.

 

Has anyone else encountered this issue when using Web Performance Monitor and IE 10 or 11?

 

I edited the registry for these users to disable database and caching, but I still haven't seen this be effective, although it may be that I need to reboot the Orion server.

 

Has anyone else done anything different?

A query to the SolarWinds Information Service Failed in Manage Transaction Monitors

Hi,

 

Whenever I open the Manage Transaction of WPM it always prompt this error "A query to the SolarWinds Information Failed" and won't able to show all the transactions.

 

Is there anyone here also encountering my issue? How do you resolve this issue? Is there any hotfix for this?

 

Already restarted all Orion services but still to no avail.

TCP Waterfall Chart in Email Alert

I'm trying to set up an alert that will send me a screenshot of the TCP waterfall page when a transaction step fails. The action itself seems to be working, however the contents of the email only include the SolarWinds logo that appears at the bottom right of the waterfall page. This makes me think the email is being sent before the entire page has loaded. Has anyone been able to successfully email the waterfall charts when a step fails? If so, how did you do it?

WPM upgrade question

So I upgraded to v12 last night. We have an NPM server and two WPM servers. I ran the update on the NPM server for WPM. My question is do I have to run the installer for the individual WPM servers? Or should they be all set? Not sure if there is a way to determine they have been updated as well.

web performance monitor with Azure ADFS

Is anyone using Web Performance Monitor with a website behind Azure ADFS? 

I put in the site i want to monitor and it asks for authentication and successfully logs me in, but when playing back the recording it goes directly to the previously generated unique login url that is no longer valid for the current session.

 

I think i need a way to have it browse to the site and then wait for the redirect to happen. 

 

Any ideas?

WPM TCP Waterfall Chart zoomed in

It appears on all my recordings that the TCP waterfall chart is zoomed in, or not displaying data correctly. It shows 1ms with a bar but everything else doesn't show a bar even when I mouse over and it shows a stat like +4 seconds. Below is an example with most of the names excluded but you can see on the left side the number of entries in that chart that aren't shown with a bar on the graph. Does anyone know what could cause that?

WPM Monitoring External Web Sites (Architecture Discussion)

We have roughly 24 customer facing web sites in our DMZ.  We plan to use an external data center (a few servers) to deploy the WPM players; to monitor the customer experience.

 

** In our Orion infrastructure we have 8 pollers and a dedicated database server (internally).

 

I need to understand what and how the payload [(externally from the players), (metrics, other)] gets back to the database (internally).

A player by default listens on port 17781 [server initiated].  Port 17782 is used when you configure for Player initiated.

 

Question: What does this communication contain [server initiated]?

                 Same question for Player initiated?

 

Question: Would the player (in our case 8 polllers) communicate with Poller One exclusively?

 

My concern is securing this connection external to internal as tightly as I can.  I am curious as to how you guys are doing this.

 

What am I overlooking and should be concerned with in the context of security?

Sporadic Issue with text input

I have a transaction that performs the following steps:

 

1,  Log into site using ID and Password

2.  Answers2 challenge questions

3.  Match a keyword

 

The Issue I'm having with this transaction is as follows:

 

While the ID and password are handled correctl, the answers to the two challenge questions (same answer for both)  are only handled correctly 60% of the time.  The other 40% of the time, the answers to both questions are entered in the same field!

 

I tried using XY mode to fix this issue an force the passwords into the two separate fields, however while it works 100% in the recorder, it works 0% in the player.

 

I am using version 1.5.1 both on the player machine and on the orion server.

 

There is no javascript validation on this page.

Problem with transaction that failes without any failed steps

Hi

 

I have a problem there i have a transaction that failes but no step has failed, it has done 2 steps of 9 and the rest gets out grayed, as failed message i got "COM object that has been separated from its underlying RCW cannot be used." someone that have the same problem or know a solution to the problem?

Bulk export/import WPM recordings?

Is there any way to do this? We are breaking out WPM instance into a separate Orion instance because we are looking at deploying a very large amount of WPM transactions over the next few months. Currently we have about 80 - 100 transactions that we need to migrate from the old WPM instance to the new one but it looks like the export button only works with a single recording. I have been looking at the database and there are a couple of tables involved for WPM so I might be able to script out a SQL export and import but if there is a cleaner way to do this I'd prefer to not reinvent the wheel.

 

Any ideas on this.

Anyway to do a text match on page source?

I was wondering if there was anyway to get the text matching to check the web page source on WPM.  I know the HTTP/HTTPS monitor on SAM can, but it cannot navigate a login page. I tried searching for the <title> tag as a test in WPM, but it wouldn't match.

WPM playback issues

Hi Guys,

 

I need to monitor a number of external websites, so i used WPM to do this to get back statistical data etc... I can successfully record the transaction in the WPM recorder and add it into the Orion web console. Baselines have been rounded off to the nearest 10 decimal place.
Once the first initial poll takes place after a few minutes, i get an error message reading

- step ( website name ) failed : Resource not found.

When i look at the screenshots in the steps on the Orion console it comes up with a

- This program cannot display the webpage -

I have checked this with other web sites such as Google, BBC etc and they all come back with the same error. I have successfully opened the external websites on all versions such an IE, Mozilla, Chrome and safari. Opened them both on the server as well.


Whats confusing is i already have 2 websites that are being polled every 2 minutes up and running flawlessly, yet when i try to add additional recordings to be monitored, i keep getting the same error message.


Please forgive my ignorance if i might be doing something really silly or wrong, i am new to this so please be patient with me, i will answer to any questions you have to replies to the best of my ability.



Please advise.

Transaction Monitor Error (Element field not found)

The recording that I created works fine when I run it manually.  But when I run the transaction every 10 minutes, it always fail with "element text field not found".. On my other recording, intermittently the

errors are "element div not found",  "element button not found" or 'element link not found".   Is there anything that I need to add on the recording to make these run properly? Thanks

Transactions Randomly Marked "DOWN"

I've noticed over the past week or so that randomly, a few of the WPM transactions will show down on Step One.  When I go to the recorder, I can play them correctly, but inside WPM they show down.  When I look at the screenshot of the error, it is blank and shows the error: Element 'text field' was not found.  After a while they will recover and show as UP.  I'm not sure what would be causing this and was wondering if this has showed up for anyone else.  This doesn't look to be a problem with the poller as all of the other transactions are running and polling correctly.

Change recorder browser (WPM)

Hello,

 

Actually the WPM uses the IE browser for the recorder, and for some sites we have problems with this browser, and we are having the same problems on the recorder.

There's any way to change the browser used by the recorder? (for Firefox or chrome)

In looking around about WPM, I am seeing TCP Waterfall Charts for transactions, but I'm unable to find this resource in our installation.  Where would I find/assign this resource to our transaction views?

WPM Player - Communication Error

Hi All

 

I have bit of a problem with one of our Web performance Player servers.  Several times a day one particular player will stop working.  There is nothing specific in the windows logs aon the server, the Player service uses about 1.7Gb memory and the service is still up and running, but it shows a communication error in the Web console and the only way to sort this issue at present is to restart the player service.

 

Are there any hot fixes i may need?

 

we are using web performace monitor 2.0.1 with no service pack

Changing location of file storage

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to relocate the drive where SEUM stores the tmp.hdmp files.  Right now they go to c:\users\SEUM=User-1\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue

Since we keep out c:\ drive very small I want to change the default location to the E:\ drive.  Where do I go to look for this setting?

SEUM-User-# using up disk space

I've got three players spun up on Amazon with modest but sufficient resources to do the job.  So far I've got 6 monitors assigned to each player.  I've noticed that the seum-user-# subdirectories grow larger than the cache settings allow in the browser settings which suggests the cause is not temporary IE files.  More than once they've consumed nearly the entire disk space.  The culprit folder appears to be C:\users\seum-user-#\appdata\local\microsoft\windows but the contents of that folder do not add up to what the file browser says should be in there [with the hidden file attribute set to display].  The first couple of seum-users seem to be the bigger disk-hogs.

 

It's a relatively vanilla set up.  Amazon provides Win08R2 plain Jane instances, I've added only the Player executable.

 

I've read other threads where it was suggested to stop the player service and delete the accounts or delete the temporary files folder [which doesn't appear to be the problem folder].  The better solution is to not have these user account folders over-grow their banks at all.  I'm not the OS maven I hoped to be and looking for advice/clues/commiseration.

WPM is alerting false positives

Hi, We are using WPM 2.2.1 version and as per the recommendation by SW , we have limited the number of URL's per player under 50. But here comes the issue, post the addition we started getting false positives. Have tried many ways in clearing the issue but it was not resolved.

Currently, the playback interval is 10 min for some and 60 min for some. Warning & Critical thresholds are 61 & 50.

Is there any check list to be made in finalizing all required stuff should be installed on a recorder or a player before we recording the transaction ?

Also, when the transaction is recorded it is playing very well but after assigning the player we start getting false alerting. So as a remediation step, we have added that recording to all the player location to find the right one but all are emiting false alert. Could someone please suggest on how to resolve it ?

A couple of days back we are asked to install Hotfix 2 for WPM 2.2.1 as they have  seen some JavaScript issues. But even this did not resolved the issue.
